Why is it important?

Worcester Park is on the borders of Kingston, Epsom and Sutton, and is easily overlooked. It is intended that this statue becomes the element that ties the three boroughs together, and puts Worcester Park back on the map.

There has been a recent development in Cheam and Worcester Park which has made dramatic improvements to the approach experience, and to the high street in general, but no attempt has yet been made to own the rich cultural history of the area. It is not possible to place a Blue Plaque on the house in which he lived: it has long since been demolished.

The sculpture should provide a focal and a talking point for the area that will encourage local people to be proud of the heritage it has, which has been uncelebrated for so long. It will also become an attraction for people outside the local area, and provide a changing point of information and interest, as well as an ever-changing art exhibition space.

We believe the sculpture to be nationally significant, in that, as a 'living work of art'. It is a sculpture that can change over time, with the collaboration of many artists, and will be significantly developing the art form of sculpture.

In addition, we view the work as capable of engaging and influencing significant numbers of people in England beyond the area of Worcester Park - and there are Steampunks all over the world who will get to hear about it too. We want this to be a worthy tribute to HG Wells' work.
