South London Open Mic Nights — The Top 10

Fiona Leake | 04/06/19

A fantastic live music venue with regular events on offer, including an excellent open mic hosted by Ben Henderson (together with his singer-songwriter wife Tixia, they perform as a duo called Moth).

The night’s been running for two and a half years; they started it on New Year’s Eve and have enjoyed ringing it in with an open mic ever since. There’s also the occasional fancy dress on offer for the holidays.

It’s a bit of a festive event every week. They decorate the pub so that it looks like a party; with hundreds of fairy lights, bunting, dolls and cybermen hanging from the ceiling!

They provide a PA, several mics and stands, an acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, tuner, and even a selection of capos.

A mixture of performers show up and it’s a great venue for new artists or fresh material, with a friendly and receptive audience and an atmosphere of encouragement. They get full bands who bring amps, solo performers on guitar, autoharps, ukuleles, singer-songwriters, classical pianists, and sometimes spoken word, comedy.

The nights vary – sometimes it’s quieter with more of a chilled–out vibe, but they usually end up busy, with people travelling to the pub just to listen.

Ben and Tixi are running a very popular Open Mic down at The Hogarth in Surbiton (updated) – a bit of a party atmosphere, and it goes on until late, too.

Head down early to join the party! Music starts at 8pm or so. People tend to pre-book slots early for this one, but the last hour or so is open to anyone, so if you haven’t signed up, they should be able to get you onstage!

You can always look forward to enjoying an eclectic night, open to all styles of music. There will be a PA with foldback and a few decent mics and stands, some natty lighting and as always, a fully qualified sound engineer on hand.

Details are available on this website. Just bring your instrument and plug it in and celebrate the coming of the weekend! In short, there’s everything else you need to have an end of the week place to go to let your hair down!

The Open Mics are generally on Sundays and Mondays – but best check with this website, Lemonrock, Open Mic Finder, or check on the Facebook events, because sometimes it swaps around a bit.

Of course we run occasional Fridays as well - watch this space for details!
